about
Character's Name: Ion
Age: biologically fourteen years old; chronologically two years old
Canon: Tales of the Abyss
Species: Replica. Thanks to the technology of fomicry, a duplication process, he is a mere copy of the original Ion. But with the original being human, he is basically something of a human as well. A lot of fonon stuff and whatnot.
Gender: male
History: Ion's wikia page | Tales of the Abyss synopsis
Appearance: the manliest man in distress
The kid stands at the height of 166 cm while weighing in at 58 kg.
Personality: Being the symbol of peace, Ion is the head of a major religious organisation called The Order of Lorelei. With this in mind, it has Ion's question his own decisions and actions on a day to day basis. While there are people below him that make choices that effect the people of the country of Daath on a wide scale, Ion opts to see that it is the better choice made to benefit his people. Despite being in position of religious power, he does not always follow as desired by the religion for the sake of seeing people protected.
The Score, which foretells the future, is depended on by many people of the planet. Plenty of people see it as absolute even inside the Order. However, Ion sees the Score as a mere possible future of many. He believes that one can decide and make their own future. Because of this belief, it drives him to go so far as to ask his Fon Master Guardian, Anise Tatlin, to take him away from the city of Daath in search of peace despite it not being an official recognised order.
Ion feels rather strongly about having clear communication with others. He seeks to get down to the root of other's issues to make sense of their goal despite the chance of him not agreeing with it, himself. This is even extended to the people who move to kidnap him; Ion does not choose to put up a fight that he cannot win in favour of trying to shed light on the situation. While being fully aware that talking is not able to resolve every problem, he prefers discussion over violence and he does raise his own voice once in a while.
With all the people he meets, Ion always sees the best in people in any way possible. Such an example can be demonstrated with Luke fon Fabre; unfortunately, when Ion first meets this person, Luke does not address Ion too kindly. But with Luke telling Ion that he can come along with him as Ion 'has a face so pale that he looks like he's about to die,' Ion instantly declares that Luke is a very kind person and easily admires Luke. And when it comes to the matter of Luke being the downfall of an entire city, unlike the rest of the party, Ion does not choose to blame Luke and later reasons that he could have stopped Luke, himself.
If anything, Ion is constantly dishing out compliments and holding sincere adoration towards someone. This scale goes from something to small as with the scenario mentioned previously with Luke to something much bigger as Emperor Peony's stance on trying to keep peace between countries. It is typically because the person in question is being helpful and 'mindful' of others that has Ion so invested. However, he does also admire those who also use physical strength or other abilities.
On the basis of his positivity, it is projected onto his relationship with Anise Tatlin. He holds this relationship in high regard and often listens to what Anise tells him to do despite her not doing the same in return. There are also times where Anise's greed drives her and takes advantages of people but Ion is typically praising her. While Anise certainly isn't a bad person and has good intentions, herself, this may be a link up to Ion being somewhat naive.
Unfortunately, while putting others in a very good light, Ion does not have a grand opinion of himself. Due to his health being poor, Ion is able to take little physical action. Having to depend on others for protection, he does not like having to be 'useless' in this matter. He wants to take part and fight along side those who he cares about. While he is aware of the strain of using any of his Daathic Fonic Artes, he does make use of them with the situation calls. This only results in growing weaker and he feels it is a consequence of the party having to slow down from time to time.
He feels that he has only done a good part of deceiving others despite having a longing to do the opposite. It is kept hidden from Arietta the Wild, a former Fon Master Guardian, that he is not the original Ion. Because of the original Ion's illness, replacements were made and someone replaced him. While the current Ion does not have the memories of the original, the current Ion speaks as he knows history with Arietta and treats her kindly. This is also done in turn with his own current guardian, Anise, and he feels the need to apologise as he doesn't mean to be be a liar.
While Ion says that there is no replacement for him but there are others who can easily be Fon Master, he does not see himself as an individual. He only sees failure in himself. This connection is stretched to another replica of Ion who he meets, Sync, with the other replica claiming to have no purpose in life and that he is a failure as well. It is meeting Sync that he feels there is someone who is the same as him. However, he witnesses the other committing suicide and it only causes Ion to cry for the first time. With the encounter he has with Sync, it only has him reevaluate his life.
Ion has the thought of life being meaningful because of the choice's that person makes, whether they be purely human or a replica. It is a majority of his life, however, that he feels what he does is strictly under the name of the original Ion. That has him feeling unfulfilled, especially after meeting Sync, with him wanting to decide on something as himself. It is recognised, at some point, that a desire of his is to die. With that mindset, he feels he is able to lift the burden on others and finally do something for himself as Ion and not as the original.
Abilities:
- As the Fon Master, Ion has the ability to read the Planetary Score which records all of the 'life' of the planet as well as its future. Unfortunately, it puts a terrible burden on the reader and physically weakens Ion with each reading.
- Also with bearing the title, he is able to unlock seals set by Yulia Jue, the writer of the Score. Such an example would be the defense systems that Yulia set on trees that support the Outer Lands above Qliphoth.
- He is capable of placing and removing curse slots. Curse slots allow the user to control the target with the use of their memories and strong feelings which would have them desire to commit the act to begin with.
- He does have the abilities referred to as Daathic Fonic Artes but details are rather vague. Artes are battle movements, whether they be physical or spells, and used by many characters in game. The Daathic Fonic Artes are limited to those higher up in the religious orgaisation Order of Lorelei and are rather powerful. Due to Ion's poor health, the boy is often told to avoid using these artes as they have potential to leave him unconscious.
- It is noted that he is seen using a particular spell near the beginning of the game that Ion identifies as a Daathic Fonic Arte. A glyph is formed after some time of charging light with his hand. After bringing his hand to the ground, a barrier of light comes around him. This results in a high amount of damage or completely ridding him of the enemy.
- And there is reading and comprehension of Ancient Ispanian. You know, for kids.
